Many patients have questions about problems with their prostate and impotence. The simple answer is that prostate cancer does not cause impotence. However, the treatments for the disease can oftentimes lead to impotence, otherwise known as erectile dysfunction.
All of the common treatments to prostate cancer can result in impotence. The most frequently used prostate cancer treatments are surgical removal of the prostate, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, and hormone therapy.
And impotence can settle in quickly. Some patients experience impotence right after the surgery is completed. The degree of impotence is largely determined by the stage of the cancer, the treatment procedure, and the skill of the doctor during the treatment.
What treatment options are there available for prostate cancer treatment patients with impotence? The most common treatment is oral medications. If they do not work, other solutions include injections, suppositories, vacuum pump usage, and implants.
Oral medication is the most common treatment. There are three medications approved by the FDA: Viagra (Sildenafil Citrate), Levitra Vardenafil hydrochloride), and Cialis (Tadalfil). All three of the pills are part of the PDE-5 family of pharmaceuticals which cause erections by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal. They all typically take about an hour to take effect, though the times may be shorter. Viagra and Levitra usually last about four hours and Cialis can last up to 36 hours.
PDE-5 inhibitors only work for about seventy percent of patients though, so other impotence treatments may need to be used. One treatment is intracavernous injections of medications like Papaverine and Regitine. Suppositories are another treatment. Also known as medicated urethral system for erection, or MUSE, a drug such as Alprostadil, is inserted into the urethra about five minutes before intercourse which causes an erection that can last up to an hour.
Are there any other options? Vacuum pumps may appeal to some men. These work by constricting the blood into the penis resulting in an erection. Another method some men seek is penile implants. Implants come in two forms, inflatable and semi-rigid rods. Inflatable implants utilize cylinders and inflatable tubes that fill with a solution, making the penis erect. Semi-rigid rods are rods that are implanted into the penis that can be bent into erect or non-erect positions. These are substantially cheaper than inflatable implants, but can be uncomfortable.
There are several solutions offered for prostate and impotence problems. Information provided here is only meant to be information and as with any type of medical treatment, you should always consult a doctor about impotence and treatment. They will be able to provide you with the best solution for you.
